Before I talk about the 2014 Blue Devils production of Felliniesque, I just want to say one thing:
GORDON GOODWIN WROTE A COMPOSITION FOR THE BLUE DEVILS!!!
OK, now that I have that out of the way, I have a confession to make…
I have never seen a Federico Fellini movie.
Of course, I’m not the only drum corps fan who can say that. While the theme of Felliniesque may lead to unfamiliar territory for some of us, the music is not unfamiliar territory for the Blue Devils. Danny Elfman’s and Goordon Goodwin’s music formed a significant portion of BD’s 2008 production, Constantly Risking Absurdity. Only a couple years prior, the Blue Devils used the music of Nino Rota’s The Godfather. As a result, we already have a good idea of what this year’s show will sound like.
What the show will LOOK like, however, is hard to say. We know that the Blue Devils have placed a heavy reliance on props over the past few years. Expect to see items which would fit on a movie set or in a Fellini movie. We’ve also seen the corps uniform undergo alterations which tie into the show theme each year, though whether or not that happens in 2014 won’t be clear until the corps performs in uniform for the first time. The best clue as to the visual programs can be found in the trailer for this year’s show.
The Blue Devils have also posted two videos of an interview with Program Coordinator Scott Chandler discussing Fellini and the 2014 program. These serve as great primers for the thought process which went into creating this year’s show.
The first performance of the 2014 Blue Devils will take place at their annual Family Night on June 14 at Diablo Valley College. Until that first experience, we can only imagine with “Felliniesque” wonder (see what I did there?) what this show will be like.
