2015 Blue Knights playlist:
The Blue Knights’ 2014 show, That One Second, was one of the most poignant and emotional performances of last season, touching fans and members alike. It can be very difficult for a corps to follow up such a popular and deep show. The Blue Knights have gone all in for 2015 in an attempt to take the corps and the activity to the next level, performing a show in which every selection is new to drum corps. Why would they do such a thing? Because.
The show theme comes from the Beatles song of the same name, one of five musical selections that make up the 205 Blue Knights repertoire. Because, from the Beatles’ Abbey Road album, lends a very ethereal and haunting air to the music which the Blue Knights will play, and should translate very well to a brass choir arrangement. In fact, the same can be said about every selection in the Blue Knights show, especially I’m Alive from Adam Watts and Fly to Paradise by Eric Whitacre. Paradise evokes a similar feel to Whitacre’s earlier work, Lux Aurumque, but the style fits perfectly with the rest of the show music.
The music also focuses on themes of triumph, overcoming adversity, and the joy of living. One example of this can be found in the lyrics of Regina Spektor’s Apres Moi, which proclaims “I must go on standing. You can’t break that which isn’t yours.” The Blue Knights design team must have had these themes in mind as well, as demonstrated in their show announcement: “We are celebrating the beauty and joy of being alive and open to possibility.”
Until the 2015 Blue Knights show is fully on the field, in both musical and visual forms, it will be hard to say how the corps is going to realize and communicate the theme of Because to the audience. This is the same design team, however, which brought That One Second to the field, so their track record is such that we will also be celebrating the beauty and joy of this show.
