2019 Reading Challenge

2019 Reading Challenge Book #1: We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Full disclosure: I did not pick this book to start my reading challenge because it would be a “quick read”.

The first book in my challenge was recommended to me by my friend and fellow Glassmen alumni Michelle Wright, a researcher and assistant professor at the University of Texas in Austin.

Title: We Are All Feminists

Author: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Like I said above, this was a quick read, but that doesn’t lessen the power of what Adichie wrote. The book is an essay based off a TedX talk Adichie gave with the same name. Adichie uses personal anecdotes to define what feminism is, why it is important, and how much work we still need to accomplish in order to make gender equality a part of all cultures.

I highly recommend this book. Adichie’s stories are heartfelt and impactful in the way they lay bare her struggle with how “feminism” is seen as a negative by those who either don’t understand what it is or don’t want to upset the status quo. I am definitely a feminist and there’s no reason you shouldn’t be, as well.
