Another Christmas has gone by. Although my wife and I had to leave Indianapolis Christmas night to get home ahead of the oncoming blizzard, we both enjoyed the time we did have with our family. My sister-in-law Molly made great food to enjoy as we watched our niece Tess discover the wonder of opening presents Christmas morning, then playing with said presents throughout the day. Now, as SNERMERGERD 2012 drops a metric ton of white stuff on my home and most of the Midwest, I have plenty of time to sit back and enjoy the great gifts my family gave me this year.
I am sitting in the press box of Lucas Oil Stadium as I write this as, in about 2 1/2 hours, the top 12 junior drum and bugle corps in the world meet one last time to compete for the title of Drum Corps International World Champion in 2012. I will be giving you Live From the Stands coverage on Drum Corps Planet so be sure to watch the discussion thread here for all the updates.
The first DCI Fan Network webcast of the season took place on Saturday, June 23, as Stanford, CA, once again hosted the DCI West regional. One of the benefits of a Fan Network subscription is the “DVR” capabilities viewers and implement throughout the show, allowing fans to rewind and fast forward through the recording. For those who could not watch the performance live, like myself, this format also presents to option to watch the regional in its entirety. As a result, I was able to watch DCI West as if it was Saturday night. All I needed was a beer and a hot dog. Since I hadn’t “spoiled” myself by checking the scores, I also had no idea what the results were so, for all intents and purposes, I was watching DCI West LIVE!
For the 41st time, the Drum Corps International summer season began, this time in Akron, Ohio, at the Bluecoats’ Innovations In Brass competition. Like last year, the first show of the year was also filmed and will be shown to the nation in cinemas all over the country on Monday. Also like last year, the scores for this show were kept secret and, along with the Louisville, KY, show’s scores, will be announced at the end of the cinecast. As a result, the crowd left the stadium not knowing who was on top, although many, including myself, had an opinion as to who placed where and why. Since there were no announced results, I have reviewed the shows in the order of appearance, capping each review off with my predicted placement for each corps. Also, since this was my first read, I tried not to get too specific with each show, hopefully giving my readers a general overview of each concept and level of performance presented by the corps.
Now that WGI is over, it is time to look forward to the upcoming drum corps season. I’ve gone through the calendar and here are the shows I plan to attend, either as a spectator or as a reviewer, in 2012:

I may attend the Tour Premiere cinema event on June 18th. Since I’ll have seen the shows live two days earlier, I’d be going more because of the social aspect. I may also attend the Music Under The Stars DCA show in Hornell, NY, in July 28th. That will depend more on whether DCW needs somebody to cover that show. I’ll update this post once I have word on that show.
If you plan on being at any of these shows, let me know in the comments below. I would love to meet fellow drum corps fans.
