June 2017 Drum Corps World Show Reviews

The 2017 drum corps season has started, and so has my show review season!

I reviewed two shows for the June edition of Drum Corps World. The first was the DCI Tour Premiere cinecast on Thursday, June 22. The focus of that review was on the technical aspects of the cinecast. A separate review of the performances is also in the June issue.

The second review was of the Innovations in Brass: Massillon show on Saturday, June 24. That review was a performance review of all 5 World Class and 2 SoundSport corps which performed that night.

You can find my cinecast review here.

You can find my Massillon show review here.

You can also find my LIVE From the Stands live blog coverage of the Massillon show here.

UPDATE: Photos I took during the Massillon show are located here. I’ve opened the album to allow you to add your photos as well!

2012 Innovations In Brass Review

For the 41st time, the Drum Corps International summer season began, this time in Akron, Ohio, at the Bluecoats’ Innovations In Brass competition. Like last year, the first show of the year was also filmed and will be shown to the nation in cinemas all over the country on Monday. Also like last year, the scores for this show were kept secret and, along with the Louisville, KY, show’s scores, will be announced at the end of the cinecast. As a result, the crowd left the stadium not knowing who was on top, although many, including myself, had an opinion as to who placed where and why. Since there were no announced results, I have reviewed the shows in the order of appearance, capping each review off with my predicted placement for each corps. Also, since this was my first read, I tried not to get too specific with each show, hopefully giving my readers a general overview of each concept and level of performance presented by the corps.

2012 Innovations In Brass TONIGHT!!!

I will be at the 2012 Innovations In Brass drum corps competition, the first competition of the 2012 DCI season, tonight, starting at 7:30 PM. The show is at the University of Akron’s Infocision Stadium and will feature six of last year’s Top 12 corps:

Blue Stars
Phantom Regiment
Carolina Crown
Cavaliers
Cadets
Bluecoats

I will be a fan for this show, so I won’t be doing a DCP Live From the Stands live blog. I will, however, take some photos and post my thoughts on each corps after they perform. There is no retreat tonight, as the scores will not be announced until Monday’s cinecast event, so I won’t live stream the retreat ceremony on my Ustream channel, although I plan to do so at other shows I attend.

If you’ll be at the show, look for me. I’m wearing my blue Glassmen horn line t-shirt and shorts and I’m short, so I should be easy to find. 😀

Let the fun begin!

2011 DCI Western Michigan Review

At least once a year, I like to take a drum corps road trip. At the very least, I make it out to Rochester, New York, for each year’s DCA championships. This year, as my wife was out of town for the weekend, I decided to make the trek to Grand Rapids, Michigan, site of the 2011 DCI Western Michigan premiere tour event. The drive gave me an excuse to blast drum corps out my car window, but, being the boring geek I am, I listened to podcasts for most of the drive. Continue reading 2011 DCI Western Michigan Review

2011 Three Rivers Summer Music Games Review

I almost didn’t get my first live drum corps fix on Thursday night. The weather had been schizophrenic all day, alternating between significant rainfall and sunny skies. The weather report for Pittsburgh was not promising, either, as the radar showed possible storms hitting Baldwin High School’s Highlander Stadium at some point during the night’s performances. Fortunately, while there was a minor sprinkle during intermission, the show went off without a hitch, and the five corps were able to perform their full shows. Two of those corps, the Glassmen and the Boston Crusaders, were making their 2011 competitive debut at this show, so it was a great chance for me to get a first read on both of their shows, especially since I would see Glassmen again on Saturday at the DCI Western Michigan major show. I also had the opportunity to view the Crossmen, Spirit of Atlanta, and Bluecoats at this show. Continue reading 2011 Three Rivers Summer Music Games Review
