2019 Ohio Indoor Performance Association State Championships Photos

While I managed to post 10 photos for each of the performing units at this past weekend’s Ohio Indoor Performance Association State Championships on the OIPA Instagram account, there were a ton of photos I took which didn’t make the feed. Fortunately, I’ve uploaded them all to my Smugmug account for you to enjoy!

These photos are free to view and share. I do ask that you give me photo credit should you post a photo on social media.

Saturday – Color Guard

Sunday – Percussion and Winds

2019 Ohio Indoor Performance Association State Championships

It’s the beginning of the end of the 2019 indoor season. All across the country, indoor color guards, drum lines, and winds groups are gathering for their state and regional association championships. Some are also preparing for the 2019 Winter Guard International championships in just a few weeks. Nevertheless, it’s a bittersweet time as the members of these groups prepare to perform together for the final time this season.

For me, the end begins in Wapakoneta High School in Wapakoneta, Ohio, site of the 2019 Ohio Indoor Performance Association state championships. The championships take place over the weekend of March 30 (color guard) and March 31 (drum line and winds). Hundreds of young performers will spin, dance, and play in front of their family, friends, instructors, and fans while also competing for the chance to be champions in their class.

As I have in the past, I will be providing social media coverage for both days of OIPA championships. Be sure to follow the OIPA social media feeds to see all of the photos I post online. If you’re at the event, make sure you also post your photos and updates using the hashtags #oipa2019 and #oipafinals, as well as tagging OIPA’s social media accounts.

Also, if you’re at the event, be sure to find me so I can take a picture of you and post it on the feed!

Will I see you in Wapakoneta? Let me know in the comments below. Add your performing group if you’ll be on the floor.

2019 Ohio Indoor Performance Association Firestone Competitions

After a month and a half, I’m back in the indoor world!

The Ohio Indoor Performance Association will hold it’s 2019 Firestone competitions on Saturday, March 16 and Sunday, March 17 at the Firestone Community Learning Center in Akron, Ohio. With just two weeks remaining in the OIPA season and Winter Guard International championships next month, this will be an excellent opportunity to check out the great colorguard, percussion, and winds groups Ohio has to offer.

I will be attending both events running OIPA’s social media coverage of all performing groups. If you will be at either show, whether you’re a performer, staff member, admin, volunteer, parent, or just a fan, be sure to say hi! I’d love to post a photo of you enjoying the show to OIPA’s Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook accounts. You can also post your own photos with the hashtags #oipafirestone and #oipa2019.

A Declaration of Independence from Facebook — Mike Elgan

As you may have noticed on my website and social media feeds, I have been wrestling with the possibility of shutting down and deleting my Facebook account. Over the past year alone, what we’ve learned about Facebook’s business practices, it’s lack of security, and its continual disregard for democracy and its own members’ rights have concerned me greatly. When the Cambridge Analytica scandal came to light, I made the move of deleting the Facebook and Instagram apps from my mobile devices, using Facebook from the website only and only recently creating a new Instagram account in order to post photos of bands performing at Bands of America Grand Nationals when my website hit its space limit.

Today, I came across this article from journalist and world traveler Mike Elgan. Mr. Elgan has been a frequent guest on the TWiT podcast network and is even their former news director. His writing and observations are always well thought out and well written, including this article. Mr. Elgan has made the decision to leave Facebook on July 4, 2019, using the time between now and then to make sure he can stay in touch with those he wants to and also to determine what exactly it takes to permanently delete himself from Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Mr. Elgan did a significantly better job explaining his reasons for leaving Facebook than I would. As a result, I will let Mr. Elgan speak for me as his reasons align with my own.

Each of us has to answer two questions for ourselves

1. Does Facebook harm people?
2. Does my participation in Facebook enable that harm?

For me, the answer to both questions is yes. And so I cannot in good conscience continue to participate in Facebook’s harm, despite the inconvenience.

I am joining Mike Elgan in declaring my freedom from Facebook and will also delete my account on July 4, 2019. If you would like to stay in touch with me, please let me know in the comments below and I will make sure we trade contact information. You may also reach me at my email address (kevingamin at gmail dot com), which is the best method of communicating with me online.

Who’s with me in freeing themselves from the shackles of Facebook?
